Most of us are aware of the relationship between violent video games and aggressive behaviour. But now for the first time, researchers have found that some video games can make children kinder and more likely to help other people.
Pro-social video games involve characters who help and support each other in non-violent ways.
Three separate studies conducted in different countries using different age groups and a variety of scientific methods all suggest that playing games with pro-social content cause players to be more helpful to others after the game is over.
Douglas Gentile, lead author and a psychologist at Iowa State University said: 'Dozens of studies have documented a relationship between violent video games and aggressive behaviours. But this is one of the first that has documented the positive effects of playing pro-social games.'
'These studies show the same kind of impact on three different age groups from three very different cultures,' said Brad Bushman, study co-author from the University of Michigan. He added that 'the resulting triangulation of evidence provides the strongest possible proof that the findings are both valid and generalisable.'
This study was published in the June issue of Personality and Social Psychology Bulletin.

LOS ANGELES: Electronic Arts is steering the popular "Need for Speed" franchise in a new direction. The video game publisher announced plans to spin off the 15-year-old racing series into three driving games on different platforms. The new games will speed into three separate genres — simulation, action and arcade racing.
"It's all about crafting different games for different audiences," said Keith Munro, EA marketing vice president. "The 'Need for Speed' brand is quite powerful. It has great recognition, even outside of gaming. When we talked to consumers about what the brand meant to them, we realized that it could be stretched to new limits on different platforms."
The new games, expected to be released later this year, are "Need for Speed Shift," a first-person racing simulation for the PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360; "Need for Speed World Online," a multiplayer action-driving game for the PC; and "Need for Speed Nitro," an arcade-style racing game developed by EA Montreal for the Nintendo Wii and DS.
"In the past, our 'Need for Speed' games have done very well on all platforms," Munro said. "We just think we can do better with this new plan.
We actually have the opportunity to devote an entirely new studio and development team to the creation of a from-the-ground-up Nintendo-only 'Need for Speed' game. We didn't have those resources available before."
Munro said EA Black Box, the Canadian developer that created every previous "Need for Speed" game, has been collaborating with developer Slightly Mad Studios on "Need for Speed Shift" and EA Singapore on "Need for Speed World Online." He also said Black Box is continuing to work on a new action driving game, despite recent companywide layoffs.

Resident Evil garners more fans and followers with every passing game due to the high standards set by the games in the series. This year Capcom is back with Resident Evil 5, starring the original hero Chris Redfield and the sexy Sheva.
This time around we travel to Africa in search of answers about the origins of the T-Virus. Chris is now a member of Bioterrorism Security Assessment Alliance or BSAA and is sent to investigate the fictional country of Kijuju.
You start the game with your AI partner Sheva Alomar, who is your guide and occasional savior in the heavily infected area. The game gives you no time to relax. Within minutes you are in the midst of an outrage, with half the village running behind you with pitchforks and shovels, reminiscent of a witch-hunt.
RE5 is a horror/survival game and in case you are not familiar with the core concept, let me explain it to you. In a survival horror game, come prepared for tons of zombies, just enough ammo and really tight level design to make you feel cornered.
RE5 is scary but it's definitely not the scariest game in the series. I remember playing RE4; the environments, dull look, closed corridors made the game scary and quite thrilling. RE5 took a bold decision to move on to open and bright spaces and the result is a game that is quite thrilling but not as scary as its previous avatars.

What it’s about: Salem and Rios, the two that constitute the Army of Two find themselves in the midst of a "disaster of epic proportions" ravaging China and Shanghai. Off course being the awesome twosome that they are, they spring into action to save these places before they’re raised to the ground.
Why it’s gonna rock: Even though Army of Two was plagued by moronic friendly A.I, the game was tremendous fun when you added in another human player into the mix. And this time round we’ve been promised "fresh, innovative and fluid co-op" along with a slew of new co-op moves.

Pocket money. I used to get about 20 bucks from my father every week. It doesn’t sound a lot at all now, but back then, it was good enough to f
it 3 needs -- arcade gaming, WWF cards and food. Gaming parlours as they were called, was our hangout. The need for some serious button mashing was satisfied here and this is where boys became “street” boys. Of course, there was the usual “Pacman”, but no other game was better than drum roll Street Fighter!
The game was simple, the characters were great and the fights were awesome! I as a kid started playing Street Fighter 2 more than 15 years ago; but the memories are as fresh as ever. As every game does, Street Fighter came to the PS3, and I was seriously impressed! My fingers have never felt this sore in a very long time. Here’s why:
Does the game look awesome?
Hell yeah! It looks brilliant. From the second I popped in the disc, it was vibrant colours all the way! Right from the opening AV to the gaming environments, it all looks good. The characters have gotten quite a good makeover with extra large biceps, big teeth, super long feet and electric green skin!
Unlike other games in the same genre like “Tekken”, the characters are 3D, they don’t exactly look that. It looks like a 2D-moving picture character, the best way I can put it. The downer would be that the cut scenes are quite average with no flair at all. But then again, you are just going to skip through the cut scenes right?
Everybody likes Kung-fu fighting! Let’s fight!
Round 1. Fight! Familiar words aren’t they? The fights in Street Fighter 4 are simple yet so entertaining! The kicks and punches are skilfully revamped with a whole host of new special moves like the focus effect and better countering. As with all button mashers, the moves in Street Fighter 4 are easy to do, but difficult to master! Newbie luck plays a serious role here.
The sad part is that there is no depth in gameplay, it doesn’t go beyond the jabs and the awesome moves. Character list is pretty much the same with the addition of 4 new characters Abel, Crimson Viper, Rufus and El Fuerte. The fights will keep you entertained for a while, but soon enough you are going to pop in another disc and forget all about this one.
A survey has revealed that despite the economic slump, Australians are still splashing out on video games.
The study revealed that people Down Under spent a record 2 billion dollars on games last year, a 47 per cent increase on 2007.
Experts reckon that with the ongoing recession, consumers will turn even more to home-entertainment options this year.
The amount being spent on video games shows no signs of slowing down, with games companies continuing to flood the market with impressive titles, killer graphics, and upgraded games consoles.
As per Interactive Entertainment Association of Australia head Ron Curry, games are no longer the sole preserve of hardcore, male tech-heads or young children, they involve the whole family.
"Sales figures for the past two years actually show that the industry has grown more than 112 per cent since 2006," News.com.au quoted Curry as saying.
"The industry has really witnessed phenomenal growth, which has largely been driven by people playing games together," he said.
The latest statistics, compiled on behalf of the IEAA for their Interactive Australia 2009 report, reveal that video gaming is changing face.
An estimated 68 per cent of Australians now play computer or video games, half of them on average at least an hour every day.
The report also shows that more than 46 per cent of gamers are women, and contrary to popular belief that video games are for children, it shows that the average age of gamers is now 30 year.
Family, action and racing games were the top-selling genres in 2007-2008, and family-friendly games have helped the growth in the video-games industry by an average 15 per cent a year.
